Austin previously spent six years at POLITICO, where he reported on Congress and the Pentagon. He covered then-Defense Secretary Ash Carter and was part of the press corps that accompanied Carter to Poland, the United Arab Emirates, Iraq, Afghanistan, and other places.
Austin’s reporting was recognized in 2016 with a Dateline Award from the Society of Professional Journalists (D.C. Chapter).
He is from Richmond, Va., and graduated with a B.A. in English from the College of William and Mary, where he was editor-in-chief of the student newspaper, The Flat Hat.
He lives in Annandale, Va., with his wife, son, and daughter.
